ASPEN Awards

ASPEN recognizes and presents awards to members who have contributed to the field by showcasing exceptional expertise in clinical practice, education, and advocacy. The accomplishments of those selected for an award improved the quality and efficacy of the profession and their actions provide a positive example for healthcare professionals. Each award is given annually and recipients are recognized at the ASPEN Nutrition Science & Practice Conference.

AWARDS

Global PN Fellowship

This fellowship is designed to introduce early-career physicians with an interest in nutrition support to ASPEN, so they can discover the important role ASPEN, education, and mentorship may have in their career development. The fellowship is supported through an unrestricted educational grant by Baxter. See the 2024 Global PN Fellowship recipients here

Patricia Anthony Future Leaders Award

The Patricia Anthony Future Leaders Award was created in honor of long-time member and former staff, Pat Anthony, MS, RD, FASPEN, for her unwavering dedication and commitment to ASPEN, the field of nutrition support, and the future generation of clinicians. Students, trainees, and new practitioners who have demonstrated leadership and dedication to excellence in nutrition support are eligible for this award. The recipient will receive complimentary registration to the ASPEN 2025 Nutrition Science & Practice Conference as well as $1,500 in travel reimbursement.

Bruce R. Bistrian Nutrition Mentorship Award and Lecture

This award honors past president, Bruce R. Bistrian, MD, PhD, MPH, for his pivotal role in the advancement of clinical nutrition research and mentorship. The Bruce R. Bistrian Nutrition Mentorship Award recognizes a clinician or scientist working in complex clinical nutrition who has made a significant contribution to the field and serves as a mentor to interprofessional colleagues. In addition to the recognition, the award winner will present a lecture at the ASPEN Nutrition Science & Practice Conference. To apply or nominate your mentor, click here

Distinguished Nutrition Support Service Awards

ASPEN members who have made exceptional leadership and practice contributions that have furthered the vision and mission of the society as well as the field over a sustained period of time are eligible to receive a Distinguished Nutrition Support Service Award. ASPEN members may directly apply for these prestigious awards or nominate a deserving colleague. NEW: Activities that support the field outside of ASPEN, such as volunteer activities with other organizations, are included with judging These awards are a great way to honor the individual’s leadership activities, contributions and volunteerism. To be eligible, individuals must have a history of at least 10 (ten) years in their profession. Winners of these awards receive a $250 stipend.

Distinguished Nutrition Support Clinician: Advanced Clinical Practice Award

NEW: This award has been expanded to include all disciplines. ASPEN pays tribute to a clinician member annually in recognition of his or her outstanding contributions in leadership, practice, and advancement of clinicians in the field of nutrition support. Individuals demonstrate excellence in patient care and education and mentorship of colleagues and students. Winners of these awards receive a $250 stipend.

Excellence in Nutrition Support Education Award

This award recognizes a nutrition support educator’s excellence in the delivery of professional education within the field. Individuals have teaching responsibilities in an academic, community, or other supervised training setting.

ASPEN Fellows

Each year, ASPEN honors exceptional achievement in practice or research and service to the organization through the Fellowship (FASPEN) designation. This award showcases the many contributions of valuable ASPEN members and recognizes their commitments to ASPEN and the field of clinical nutrition. Applications are now closed. Applications for the Class of 2026 will open in Summer 2025.

Lyn Howard Nutrition Support Consumer Advocacy Award

ASPEN members sometimes work directly with patients, families, and/or caregivers who perform admirable activities and heroically advocate for others like themselves and their families. To recognize those individuals who do so much for nutrition support, this recognition is given annually to one patient, family member or caregiver. This award is named in honor of ASPEN member and Oley Foundation co-founder, Lyn Howard, MB, FRCP.

Barney Sellers Public Policy Award

Barney Sellers, former ASPEN executive director, had a tremendous impact on public policy and advocacy during his 15-year tenure. This award honors his work with many members to advance our advocacy goals and give ASPEN a voice among policy makers in the US. Nominees have significantly contributed to ASPEN’s advocacy goals.

Stanley Serlick Award 

Annually, a pharmacist who has made significant contributions to improving safe practices for parenteral nutrition through published literature, membership on national committees or task forces, and/or presentations at regional and national meetings is recognized with the Stanley Serlick Award.

ASPEN Clinical Nutrition Team of Distinction Award

This award recognizes excellence in interdisciplinary clinical nutrition practice in institutions or agencies who meet certain criteria and compliance with ASPEN national standards, guidelines, and values. One of ASPEN’s highest achievements, multiple awards may be given annually. These clinical nutrition teams have demonstrated the highest care to their patients.

Peggi Guenter Excellence in Clinical Practice Award

The Peggi Guenter Excellence in Clinical Practice Award/Lectureship recognizes the multitude of contributions Dr. Guenter made to clinical practice, advocacy, research and ASPEN. Recipients of the award have achievements and accolades that reflect their direct influence on advancing the clinical practice of nutrition support through education, publication, advocacy and/or observational/quality improvement research which may also include the nutrition care process. Nominations are made by members of the Enteral Nutrition Committee, Malnutrition Committee, Parenteral Nutrition Committee and the Public Policy & Advocacy Committee. The Clinical Practice Committee reviews the nominations and provides a recommendation to the ASPEN Board of Directors. The recipient prepares and presents a lecture at the ASPEN Nutrition Science & Practice Conference.

New Practitioner Awards

This award recognizes emerging professionals who have contributed to the advancement of clinical nutrition. There may be up to one recipient per each of ASPEN’s sixteen Sections. Candidates demonstrate contributions to the field and involvement with ASPEN. If you are a new practitioner, apply and build your CV. Recipients receive a complimentary ASPEN ebook.
