Updated ASPEN Recommendations for L-Cysteine Hydrochloride Shortages

ASPEN has published updated recommendations to help clinicians manage shortages of L-cysteine hydrochloride (HCl), a parenteral nutrition (PN) component used primarily for preterm infants.

The ASPEN PN Product Shortage Recommendations: L-Cysteine Hydrochloride provide guidance to support safe patient care and conserve available supplies during shortages. While there is no clinical alternative to L-cysteine HCl, the recommendations outline strategies clinicians may consider to conserve available supplies and prioritize its use.

We would like to thank Petrea Cober, PharmD, MEd, BCNSP, BCPPS, FASPEN; Erin Corica, PharmD, BCNSP, HQPS; Sharon Durfee, RPh, BCNSP, FASPEN; Diana Mulherin, PharmD, BCNSP, BCCCP, FCCM, FASPEN; and Steven Plogsted, BS, PharmD, FASPEN for their contributions to the development of these updated recommendations.

To support clinicians managing other PN product shortages, ASPEN maintains a collection of PN Product Shortage Recommendations. Access the recommendations and share them with your colleagues.
