Interprofessional care is essential to the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Gastroenterologists and registered dietitians have very important roles in the selection of medical and nutritional therapies for patients with IBD. Understanding the differences in disease phenotypes and their resultant nutritional defects, as well as understanding the positioning of medical therapy for IBD, allows for a more nuanced discussion of diet and nutrition interventions to ensure optimal care.

This webinar will review the etiology, presentation, and diagnosis of IBD followed by a discussion of the various mechanisms of action for biologic and small molecule therapies that comprise the mainstay of medical management. Medical nutrition therapy is an important adjunct and, in some cases, may be a primary therapy for IBD. As such, no review of IBD treatment is complete without discussing this important aspect.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the main phenotypes of IBD and their impact on nutritional status.
  2. Summarize the different classes of biologic and small molecule medications for the treatment of IBD.
  3. Identify disease-specific nutrition counseling when caring for patients with IBD.
